Optoseven joins the BioVesi project – reliable measurement data on side streams from the food industry
The BioVesi project (2026–2028) got off to a strong start as HAMK, the University of Oulu, LUT University and the project’s industrial partners came together for a workshop to discuss the research programme, project objectives and practical collaboration. Optoseven is participating in the project by generating continuous measurement data on side streams from the food industry – data on which new bio-based water treatment solutions can be built.
BioVesi is a collaborative research project funded by Business Finland that aims to develop sustainable and bio-based methods for recovering value from food industry side streams. Organic compounds such as fats, proteins and carbohydrates contribute significantly to variations in process water load. To develop new solutions, a clear understanding of the behaviour of these side streams is required.
Optoseven’s role in the project is to support the identification and characterisation of relevant water streams by providing real-time UV-COD and turbidity data. This data reveals variations and dynamic changes in side streams at different stages of the production process. Optoseven is the project’s primary provider of continuous measurement data, supporting research, process optimisation and the development of new treatment methods.
At the project workshop organised by HAMK in June, discussions focused on research priorities, sustainability initiatives, water quality monitoring and the utilisation of food industry side streams. The day helped deepen a shared understanding of the project’s goals and identify new opportunities for collaboration.
The BioVesi project brings together research organisations and companies seeking new, sustainable ways to process, treat and utilise food industry side streams. The continuous measurement data provided by Optoseven ensures that development work is based on real process behaviour and verified observations. As a result, new solutions can be developed on the basis of measured data rather than assumptions.
